Man Overboard: Procedures That Actually Work
The statistic that should change how you sail is this: a person who falls off a yacht moving at six knots is more than 100 metres away in just over thirty seconds. In any kind of seaway, a head in the water disappears behind the wave crests almost immediately, and in water below 15°C — the North Sea in May, the Baltic for most of the season, even the Mediterranean in winter — cold incapacitation starts degrading a swimmer's ability to hold a line within ten to fifteen minutes. Man overboard recovery is not an abstract safety topic. It is a timed manoeuvre against physics and physiology, and the crews who succeed are the ones who have rehearsed it until the sequence is automatic.
The first ten seconds decide everything
Whatever recovery method you eventually use, the immediate actions are identical and they happen in parallel, not in sequence. Someone shouts the alarm. Someone — ideally a dedicated spotter who does nothing else — points continuously at the casualty and never takes their eyes off them. Someone throws flotation: the horseshoe buoy, the danbuoy, a throwable cushion, anything that floats and marks the position. Someone hits the MOB button on the chartplotter, which drops a waypoint accurate to a few metres at the moment of the press.
The spotter role is the one crews underestimate most. In a one-metre swell, a swimmer's head is visible perhaps 30 per cent of the time from a cockpit two metres above the water. Lose visual contact for twenty seconds and you may never reacquire it. On short-handed boats where there simply is no spare person, the MOB waypoint and an AIS personal beacon become the spotter, which is why offshore sailors increasingly treat AIS MOB devices clipped to the lifejacket as standard kit rather than luxury.
The quick-stop: staying close
The quick-stop method, developed and validated through trials run by US Sailing and the Cruising Club of America in the 1980s, works on one principle: never get far from the casualty in the first place. The moment the alarm sounds, the helm puts the boat hard into the wind and tacks — without touching the jib sheets. The backed headsail kills speed almost instantly and the boat begins a tight, slow circle around the person in the water, typically within two to three boat lengths.
From there the crew furls or drops the headsail, starts the engine (after checking, twice, that no lines trail in the water), and makes a final approach under mainsail and engine, coming to a stop with the casualty alongside the leeward shroud area. The enormous advantage is psychological as much as tactical: the swimmer sees the boat circling close, the spotter rarely loses contact, and the manoeuvre works even with a crew of two. The weakness shows up in heavy weather, when tacking with a fully powered sailplan can be violent, and on boats flying a spinnaker, where a crash tack is simply not available until the kite is down.
The figure-eight: the engineless classic
The figure-eight, sometimes called the reach-and-return, is the older method taught for generations by the RYA and many sailing schools precisely because it requires no engine and no gybe. The boat bears away onto a beam reach, sails five to eight boat lengths away from the casualty, tacks, and returns on a broad reach before hardening up onto a close reach for the final approach. The close reach is the crucial part: it is the one point of sail where you can fully depower by easing the mainsheet and still keep steerage, letting you coast to a stop with the casualty to leeward.
The figure-eight's strength is control. The final approach is stable, the boat is moving slowly, and there is no engine to foul a line or injure a swimmer with a turning propeller. Its weakness is distance and time: you deliberately sail away from a person in the water, and in poor visibility or rough seas, those eight boat lengths can be enough to lose them. This is why most modern instructors frame the choice plainly — quick-stop when fully crewed or when staying close matters most; figure-eight when the engine is unavailable, the crew is competent under sail, and conditions allow you to keep visual contact.
Getting them back aboard is the hard half
Most MOB discussions end at the moment the boat stops next to the swimmer. Real incidents show that recovery — the vertical metre and a half from waterline to deck — is where rescues fail. A cold, exhausted adult in saturated clothing can weigh the equivalent of 120 kilograms of dead lift, and almost nobody can climb a bathing ladder after twenty minutes in cold water.
Practical solutions you should actually rig and test: a halyard led to a lifting strop or to the lifting becket on the casualty's lifejacket, ground through a primary winch; a Lifesling, which combines a towable horseshoe with an integrated hoisting sling; or a sail dropped at the gunwale and used as a parbuckling cradle to roll the casualty up the topsides. Crews who have tried hoisting a real, conscious, cooperative human on a halyard in flat water in a marina are routinely shocked at how slow it is. That is the lesson, and it is far better learned on a calm Tuesday evening than at 0300 in a blow.
Why your crew, your boat, your drill
Here is the uncomfortable truth the diagrams hide: the published methods are starting points, not solutions. Every boat behaves differently. A heavy long-keeled cruiser carries way for three boat lengths after a quick-stop tack; a light fractional-rig sportboat stops almost dead. A high-freeboard centre-cockpit 46-footer makes alongside recovery brutally hard; a low sugar-scoop stern makes it easy but dangerous in a pitching sea. Your actual crew — your partner, your kids, your occasional weekend guests — have specific strengths the textbook never modelled.
Practising rewrites the procedure around reality. Throw a fender tied to a bucket (the bucket adds drag and simulates a body's resistance) and run the drill with the least experienced person on the helm, because statistically the most experienced sailor aboard is the most likely one to go over the side. Time yourselves from shout to contact. Most crews take more than ten minutes on the first attempt and under four by the fifth. That improvement curve is the entire argument for drilling.
Prevention is still the best recovery
Every offshore safety course ends with the same point and it bears repeating: the best MOB procedure is the one you never use. Jackstays rigged inboard along the side decks rather than at the rail, so a clipped-on sailor falls onto the deck and not over the side. Tethers with three-point hooks, clipped on before leaving the companionway at night or in anything above 20 knots. Harness discipline that does not relax just because the sun is out. The Fastnet 1979 and Sydney–Hobart 1998 inquiries both reached the same conclusion: staying attached to the boat saves more lives than any recovery technique ever will.
Briefing guests in two minutes
Charter crews and casual guests need a stripped-down version: if someone goes in, shout, point, and do not stop pointing; throw anything that floats; press the red MOB button by the chart table. Three sentences. Practise the throw with the actual horseshoe buoy on your boat, because half of them are seized into their brackets by sun-baked years of neglect. A guest who knows those three actions converts from passenger to crew at exactly the moment it matters.
