Modern Marine Navigation: Paper Charts to Chartplotters
A lightning strike does not negotiate. When one hit a charter yacht off the north coast of Mallorca a few seasons ago, it took the chartplotter, the VHF, the autopilot and both crew phones in the same half second. The boat was undamaged, the crew unhurt — and suddenly forty miles from Palma with nothing but a steering compass, a hand-bearing compass and a folded paper chart of the Balearics. They made port without drama, because the skipper had kept a written log every hour and could plot a dead-reckoning position in two minutes. That is what navigation redundancy actually means: not owning more gadgets, but building a system where no single failure leaves you blind.
The chartplotter: brilliant, and brittle
The modern multifunction display is a genuine marvel. A networked plotter from the big manufacturers — Garmin, Raymarine, B&G, Furuno — fuses GPS position, AIS targets, radar overlay, depth, wind and tide into one glass panel, and electronic chart cartography from Navionics or C-MAP is updated far more frequently than any printed chart ever was. Used well, a plotter makes coastal navigation dramatically safer: AIS alone has transformed collision avoidance in busy waters like the Strait of Gibraltar or the Singapore Strait.
But the plotter is the most failure-prone instrument aboard precisely because everything runs through it. It depends on the boat's 12-volt system, on its own software, on a GPS signal, and on chart data that is only as good as the last survey — which, in parts of the South Pacific, the Bahamas Out Islands or Indonesia, may date from lead-line soundings a century old. Charted positions in some Tongan anchorages are offset from reality by a hundred metres or more. The plotter tells you where the GPS thinks you are on a chart that may itself be wrong. Healthy scepticism is part of the toolkit.
Tablets and phones: the second layer
The most cost-effective redundancy you can buy is a tablet in a waterproof case running a serious navigation app. Navionics Boating, savvy navvy, Orca and TZ iBoat cover most cruisers; open-source sailors run OpenCPN on almost anything. A tablet has its own GPS receiver (make sure you buy the cellular version of an iPad — the Wi-Fi-only model has no GPS chip), its own battery, and charts stored locally so it works mid-ocean without signal.
The discipline that makes this layer real: download offline charts for your whole cruising area before departure, keep the tablet charged from a source independent of the main batteries — a small power bank in a dry bag is enough — and actually practise navigating with it, so the first time you rely on the app is not the day the plotter dies. Many experienced skippers run the tablet in parallel on passage as a cross-check, which also catches the rare but real cases of GPS jamming and spoofing now documented in the eastern Mediterranean, the Baltic approaches and the Red Sea.
Paper charts: not nostalgia, insurance
The UK Hydrographic Office's decision to phase out traditional paper Admiralty charts pushed many sailors to declare paper dead. Insurers, flag states and most offshore race regulations disagree, and for good reason: paper needs no power, cannot be hacked, and presents the big picture at a scale no screen matches. You do not need a hundred charts. A sensible offshore minimum is one small-scale passage chart covering the whole route, plus harbour or approach charts for your destination and your boltholes.
Just as important as the charts themselves are the tools and the habit: a 2B pencil, a Breton-type plotter or parallel rules, dividers, and an hourly log entry of position, course, speed and barometer. The log is the quiet hero. With a recent logged position, dead reckoning gets you a usable fix from nothing; without one, your paper chart is just decoration when the screens go dark.
The compass still rules
Every electronic heading sensor aboard ultimately gets sanity-checked against a swung magnetic compass, and the humble hand-bearing compass remains the fastest tool ever made for answering two vital questions: am I on a collision course (bearing not changing — take action), and where exactly am I (two or three bearings on charted objects give a fix in under five minutes). Know your local magnetic variation — about 1° W in the western Baltic, nearly 20° W in parts of the North Atlantic near Greenland — and whether your steering compass carries deviation from that new speaker you mounted too close to the binnacle.
Old skills that still earn their keep
You do not need to master a sextant to cross an ocean in 2025, though many bluewater sailors carry one and enjoy the practice of noon sights. The traditional skills with the best effort-to-value ratio are humbler. Reading tidal stream atlases and doing course-to-steer vector triangles matters enormously in places like the Channel Islands, where spring tides run at five knots around Alderney. The "one in sixty" rule estimates cross-track error in your head. Depth-contour navigation — following the 10-metre line on the echo sounder in fog — predates GPS by a century and still works when nothing else does. Transits, two charted objects in line, give an instant, error-proof position line and are the standard way through skerry channels across the Swedish and Finnish archipelagos, where painted leading marks on the rocks have guided boats since the days of sail.
Building your own redundancy stack
Think in layers, and make sure no two layers share a failure mode. A robust cruising setup looks like this: primary, the fixed chartplotter with current cartography. Secondary, a tablet with offline charts, charged independently. Tertiary, a handheld battery GPS — a basic unit costs little and lives in the grab bag with spare AA batteries. Foundation, paper passage charts, plotting tools, compasses, and the hourly written log that ties everything together. Then test the stack honestly: pick a calm day, switch the plotter off at the breaker, and navigate the next ten miles on the lower layers. Every weakness you find at leisure is one you will not discover in fog at midnight.
Matching tools to cruising grounds
The right balance shifts with where you sail. In the Stockholm or Turku archipelagos, large-scale electronic charts and transits matter most, and GPS-charted accuracy is excellent. In the strong tides of Brittany and the Bristol Channel, tidal stream maths beats raw GPS data. In the Bahamas and much of the tropics, neither paper nor pixels replaces eyeball navigation — reading water colour from the bow with the sun high behind you, because the sandbores move faster than any survey. Offshore, the priority flips to power independence and a log discipline that would let you fall back to dead reckoning for a week. Plan the toolkit for the waters, not the catalogue.
