Heavy Weather Sailing Tactics

The wind has been building for two hours, the barometer is sliding, and the sea has lost its friendly shape and started to march in steeper, closer ranks. This is the moment every offshore sailor rehearses in their head long before it arrives, because heavy weather rewards decisions made early and punishes decisions made late. There is no single right tactic — heaving-to, running off, lying to a drogue and active helming each have their place — but there is a single right attitude: act before the boat forces your hand. What follows draws on the measurable seamanship behind storm tactics and on the lessons left by sailors who survived the worst, from the Fastnet fleet of 1979 to the high-latitude voyagers who made a study of staying alive.

Reef early, reef deep — the decision you make first

The cheapest insurance in heavy weather is taken out before the weather arrives. A boat is easiest to reef while it is still sailing flat and dry, and almost every storm account contains the same quiet regret: we should have reefed sooner. The working rule is to put in a reef when you first think about it, not when you finally need it — if you are wondering whether to reef, you already should. Reduce sail in stages: first reef around 18 to 22 knots of apparent wind, second reef by the high twenties, third reef and storm canvas before 35. A deeply reefed main and a scrap of staysail or a storm jib keep the boat balanced and driving, and a balanced boat is a controllable boat. Crucially, reefing early protects the crew, not just the rig: people make better decisions when they are not yet frightened, and foredeck work is far safer before the bow starts burying.

Heaving-to: the oldest trick still works

Heaving-to is the classic way to stop the boat and rest the crew, and for many sailors it is the first heavy-weather tactic to reach for. You back the headsail, lash the helm to leeward and let the boat settle into a slow, fore-reaching crawl, making perhaps a knot or two and slipping sideways to leeward as it goes. The genius is the slick — the boat drifts to windward of its own turbulent wake, and that patch of disturbed water knocks the tops off advancing seas before they reach the hull. A well-found monohull hove-to in a gale can sit remarkably quietly, giving the crew a chance to eat, sleep, navigate or simply gather themselves. Not every boat heaves-to cleanly: fin-keeled, spade-ruddered modern designs often refuse to settle, and finding your own boat's heaving-to balance in 25 knots is homework to do long before you need it in 45.

Running off and the art of active helming

When the seas grow too large to lie across, the answer is often to turn and run with them, putting the dangerous water astern. Running off under bare poles or a scrap of headsail keeps the boat moving at the speed of the system, eases the apparent wind and lets a skilled helm steer down the face of each wave rather than be caught beam-on. The technique demands attention: you steer to keep the stern square to the largest crests, accelerate down the front to avoid being pooped, and resist the pull toward a broach. The danger is speed itself — surf too fast down a steep face and the bow can bury, slewing the boat into a violent broach or pitchpole. The 1979 Fastnet taught the fleet that a boat actively steered and kept moving frequently fared better than one left to fend for itself, but it also showed that exhausted crews cannot hand-steer forever.

Drogues and sea anchors: slowing the descent

When the crew can no longer steer, gear must take over, and here two tools are often confused. A series drogue — many small cones spliced along a long line streamed from the stern — slows the boat to a few knots while running, holds the stern to the seas and damps the surge that leads to broaching; the Jordan series drogue, developed after analysis of the same storm-survival data, has become the high-latitude standard for exactly this reason. A sea anchor, by contrast, is a large parachute set from the bow to hold the boat nearly stationary, bow-to the seas, and is favoured by some multihulls and heavy displacement cruisers. Both demand strong attachment points, chafe protection at every fairlead and the discipline to deploy them before the situation becomes desperate rather than during it. Streaming gear in survival conditions is brutally hard work, which is yet another argument for early action.

Preparing the boat and crew before it hits

Tactics fail without preparation, and the hours before a gale are when good crews earn their calm. Below decks, everything heavy is stowed low and lashed, washboards and storm shutters are fitted, and the bilge pump is checked and primed. On deck, jacklines run bow to stern, harnesses are clipped, and the storm sails are bent on or ready to hoist rather than buried in a locker. The crew eats while it still can, fills thermoses, takes seasickness medication early, and the watch system is reorganised for shorter, more frequent rotations because hypothermia and fatigue degrade judgement faster than fear. A tired, cold, hungry crew makes the mistakes that sink boats; a fed, warm, rested crew survives weather that looks unsurvivable from the dock.

Lessons from the classic survival accounts

The literature of storm survival is unusually consistent, which is why it is worth reading before you need it. The 1979 Fastnet disaster, in which a violent depression caught the fleet in the Irish Sea, drove home that abandoning a floating boat for a liferaft is often the fatal mistake — many of the lost had stepped off hulls that were later found still afloat. The slow-motion voyaging of sailors who deliberately sought heavy weather to study it produced the wave-shape and drogue research that underpins modern tactics. Single-handers in the Southern Ocean races have shown that even small, fast boats can be run off and steered through enormous seas if the helm never gives up. The common thread across every account is unglamorous: stay with the boat, keep her moving or hove-to under control, and trust well-found gear over panic.

Building your own heavy-weather playbook

No tactic is universal, so the real skill is knowing which to apply to your boat in your conditions. Spend a settled-weather afternoon learning how your hull heaves-to, how it tracks under bare poles, and where your drogue and sea anchor attach without chafe. Write a simple sequence on a card by the chart table: reef thresholds, the wind speed at which you stop beating and start managing, the trigger for streaming gear. Practise reefing in the dark, because storms rarely arrive at noon. The aim is not to memorise heroics but to remove decisions from the worst moment, so that when the barometer drops and the sea hardens, your hands already know what to do.
