The Sailing Knots Every Sailor Should Know

Watch an old Baltic schooner hand make fast a mooring line and you see something modern sailing has almost lost: the knot appears without thought, formed by hands that have tied it ten thousand times. That fluency is not showing off. On a foredeck at night, with spray coming over and the boat pitching, your conscious brain is busy with balance and the next wave; only knots stored in muscle memory get tied correctly. The good news is that a working repertoire is small. Eight knots cover essentially every job on a cruising yacht, and each one can be drilled to blindness in a week of spare minutes.

The bowline: the king, with one weakness

The bowline makes a fixed loop that will not slip, will not jam, and unties easily even after enormous load — which is why it earns its old title as the king of knots. Jib sheets to the clew, a loop around a piling, a makeshift bosun's chair, attaching almost anything to almost anything: the bowline is the default. Learn to tie it four ways: the schoolbook rabbit-and-tree method, around your own waist (the original use — it was how sailors secured themselves aloft), one-handed, and behind your back. The fourth sounds like a party trick until the day you are reaching around a furled sail you cannot see past.

Its one real weakness: a bowline can shake loose when repeatedly slatted and unloaded — a flogging sheet on a flapping genoa is the classic case — and it cannot be untied under full load. For critical applications offshore, finish it with a half hitch around the standing loop, or use a different solution entirely.

Clove hitch: fast, adjustable, temporary

The clove hitch is the fender knot. Two turns around a rail, crossing over themselves, tied in five seconds and adjusted in two — perfect for hanging fenders as you enter a lock or shift along a quay. Its honest limitation is that it works loose under variable load and can slip on smooth, large-diameter rails, so treat it as a temporary knot. For anything that must stay overnight, add two half hitches around the standing part, or upgrade to a round turn and two half hitches.

Round turn and two half hitches: the unsung workhorse

Less famous than the bowline but arguably more useful at the dock: take a full round turn around the post or ring, then two half hitches on the standing part. The round turn absorbs the load through friction while you tie, which means you can secure a surging boat in wind against a piling — something nearly impossible with a bowline because you cannot hold the load and form the loop at the same time. It also unties reliably under residual load. This is the knot for mooring rings, towing bridles and anything that pulls hard while you work.

Cleat hitch: the one everyone half knows

More damage is done in marinas by bad cleat hitches than by storms. The correct sequence: a full turn around the base of the cleat first — the base takes the load, not the horns — then one or two figure-eight crossing turns over the horns, finished with a single locking hitch laid so the line exits flat and parallel. No pile of extra hitches: a buried cleat cannot be released quickly when a squall demands it. Practise until your version looks like the harbourmaster's.

Figure-eight: the humble stopper

Tied in two seconds at the end of every sheet and halyard, the figure-eight stopper is the cheapest insurance on the boat: it stops the line from escaping through a block or clutch when everything goes wrong at once. Unlike a plain overhand knot it does not weld itself shut under load. Check your sheets now — the day a genoa sheet whips out of its car in 25 knots, you will either bless or curse whoever rigged it.

Sheet bend and double sheet bend: joining unequal lines

When you need to extend a line — a tow, a long shore line in a Norwegian fjord anchorage, a makeshift flag halyard — the sheet bend joins two ropes quickly and works even with different diameters, which a square knot dangerously does not. Form the bight in the thicker rope, weave the thinner one through. Double the second pass for slippery modern fibres or a serious load. It is essentially a bowline tied between two ropes, which makes it easy to remember.

Rolling hitch: the knot that saves winches

The rolling hitch grips a loaded line and lets you pull along its axis without slipping. The classic emergency it solves: a riding turn — an override — jamming a loaded genoa sheet solid on the winch. Tie a rolling hitch with a spare line onto the jammed sheet ahead of the winch, take the spare line to another winch, transfer the load, and the override unwinds harmlessly. The same trick relieves a loaded anchor snubber or shifts a mooring line under tension. Tie it with the two riding turns on the side the pull comes from; with slick Dyneema, add a third turn. Sailors who know the rolling hitch fix in five minutes what costs others a knife and a sheet.

Reef knot: small, specific, dangerous outside its job

The reef knot (square knot) exists for one purpose its name announces: tying reef points around a bundled sail, where the knot presses flat against canvas and the load is gentle. Tied as a bend to join two ropes under real load, it is notorious for capsizing and spilling — climbing manuals have warned against it for a century. Learn it, use it for sail ties and lashings, and refuse to use it for anything that pulls.

Drilling to darkness: the method

Muscle memory has a simple recipe: short sessions, high repetitions, degraded conditions. Keep a metre of 8 mm line by the sofa and tie each knot twenty times while doing something else — the distraction is the point, because it forces the hands to own the pattern. After two evenings, close your eyes. After a week, tie behind your back, then with sailing gloves on, then with the line cold and wet from a bucket, because stiff wet rope behaves differently. Finish with the realistic test: have someone call a knot at random and tie it within ten seconds around a rail, a ring and a loaded line. That is the standard a night watch demands, and any sailor can reach it in a fortnight of spare minutes.
